A few hours ago Oliver Sean Plunket interviewed Barry Brill on The Platform about $30 Billion of climate spending we still need to stump up for by 2030 and this is how he introduced Barry :
"How would you describe yourself?", asked Plunket.
"I'm retired and I take an interest in climate science, I'm the chairman of the Climate Science Coalition in New Zealand" replied Barry.
At this point Plunket interjected with a disclaimer in case listeners like internet troll Nicola Joy - may think Barry was part of - or anything to do with the Atlas Network so he asked...
"Are you or have you ever been part of something called the Atlas Network?" - asked Plunket.
"No. I've heard about it but never been part of it", said Barry like butter would not melt in a heatwave.
"I'm not sure it exists, it may just be a rumour" grinned Plunket, playing along with the well crafted deception.
So let's examine what we just heard.
Barry is not part of the Atlas network but he has heard of it.
He "heard about it" is similar to how David Seymour had "read about" the so called crazy Atlas Network conspiracy theory - and the question was not - whether he was running a think tank that was ever funded by the Atlas Network nor associated with it - but whether Barry was part of it.
Hence the grin on Plunket's squid face.
The fact is Barry Brill is Chairman of the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition which was launched in May 2006 with the aim of "refuting what it believes are unfounded claims about anthropogenic (man-made) global warming."
In 2007 Barry's NZ Climate Science Coalition gladly took $25,000 from the Heartland Institute - which is Atlas Network money sourced from Big Oil.
The founding directors of the NZ Climate Science Coalition included a few notable people who were strongly linked to the Atlas Network - like Terry Dunleavy.
You may know the late Terry ( RIP ) for how he set up Te Motu here on Waiheke - lovely little vineyard and restaurant next to Tantalus cos Terry was into wine - but Terry Dunleavy was also a speaker at the International Conference on Climate Change (2009) organised by the Heartland Institute think tank ( Atlas Network ) when he was not writing on Cameron Slater's BDF.
Another founder of Bob Brill's NZ Climate Science Coalition was Bob Carter - an Aussie who was a regular speaker at the Heartland Institute ( Atlas Network ).
Owen McShane ( deceased ) - another kiwi who was registered with the Heartland Institute under "who we are" ( Atlas Network ) who helped found Barry's Brills NZ Climate Science Coalition think tank.
David Henderson ( deceased ) who was registered with the Heartland Institute ( Atlas Network ) as an expert.
The list of founders actually goes on - and includes a few more like Vincent Gray. Gray’s signature is displayed alongside a full-page ad funded by the CATO institute ( Atlas Network ) that appeared in numerous newspapers including the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune in 2009. Vincent Gray was signatory to an open letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon calling for the UN to “lead the UN into abandoning the CO2-based theory of global warming and nullifying its former recommendations.”
Right so you get the picture - Barry Brill is chair of a think tank crawling with founders from the Atlas Network and Oliver Sean Plunket's first mission was to go through the exercise of making sure none of these facts were known, remained hidden, while Barry said he was not part of it - but he'd heard about it.
Nice one Plunket, what a slime.
Anyway Barry Brill stood for ACT New Zealand in Northland in the 2011 general election, where he received 0.83% of the candidate vote. As you know that's Atlas Network funded as well.
Just to make you fall off your chair laughing - Barry Brill was also - named in the National Business Review "Rich List" during 1997–99 and get this ...while Associate Minister of Energy, Brill was Chairman of the New Zealand Gas Council from 1979 - 1981, and was the Leader of the Gas Investment Mission to the United Kingdom in 1981. He was a director of Petrocorp (1982 - 1986).
Okay so he's independent we get it and nothing to do with the Atlas Network if that exists.
Barry's shock news for Plunket was that Jacinda had signed us up to $30 Billion in Nationally determined contributions (NDCs). These NDCs are at the heart of the Paris Agreement and the achievement of its long-term goals.
NDCs embody efforts by each country to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The Paris Agreement (Article 4, paragraph 2) requires each Party to prepare, communicate and maintain successive nationally determined contributions (NDCs) that it intends to achieve.
So we did - and back on 31 October 2021 Jacinda said :
"New Zealand’s enhanced contribution to the global effort to fight climate change now represents our fair share, and is in line with what’s needed if we are to avoid the worst impacts of global warming on New Zealand,” Dame Jacinda Ardern.
Well today , Monday 12 February 2024 - this came as a HUGE shock to Plunket who is always first with the news ( lol ) and he breathed a sigh of relief we had not spent any dollars yet - as Barry Brill snuffled around how it was all voluntary and we did not have to do this ( Atlas Network messaging ).
Earlier in 2021 the independent Climate Change Commission advised the Government that the NDC lodged by the previous National Government in 2016 was not consistent with global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5˚C above pre industrial levels.
Something neither Plunket nor Barry Brill mentioned - as internet troll Nicola Joy reeled back in horror - about all the unnecessary economic damage that nasty big spending radical Ardern had signed us up to.
