Seymour Divides The Nation

David Seymour's divisive Treaty Principles Bill ripped the whole of New Zealand apart last night when a leaked draft of Seymour's Bill revealed his true plans to extinguish the rights of Māori forever, to break the contract agreed between the Crown and Māori, to use democracy as a sword to divide - and human rights as a shield to ward off media snowflakes and intellectuals - so that colonisation and plunder could be unleashed and pakeha could get their hands on resources and destroy even the little of what remains of Māori legally and ultimately culturally as well.
This was akin to Trump calling for a vote to abolish the American Constitution, just on a much smaller scale and it was no wonder that the reaction in New Zealand was swift and loud.
Seymour's reaction to this fatal exposure was immediate and predictable as he had learned the best form of defence was attack and this morning Seymour's letter in the NZ Herald talks about how the Treaty should bring us together - but the problem to Seymour was the "powers that be" have interpreted that same treaty as dividing us and most of us never got asked about it.
As the Big Hairy News pointed out Seymour was saying - "Racist Uncle Bob from Tauranga knows best, not the Waitangi Tribunal nor Court of Appeal Judges".
Yes stirring up division and anti-intellectualism was Seymour's gig and don't forget the musket wars - cos Seymour thinks we should have way more semi automatics - and as you know violence has always been involved in colonisation.
"Maori have not been under such attack in recent history" were the solemn words of a historian on TVNZ 1 News as thousands head to a nationwide Hui to discuss these matters, and many other matters concerning Mana Motuhake, the protection of Te Reo Māori and other matters concerning the future.
It's not the first time Treaty Principles have been under attack in parliament - as you know in 2006 the New Zealand First party introduced the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Deletion Bill.
Yes Winston agrees with Seymour along with Shane Jones and Casey Costello from Hobson's Pledge - and together they will make sure Luxon advances the bill past the second reading - by hook or by crook - using media polls - that show there are more "racist Uncle Bobs than Jacinda fans" so - the populist thing to do is to dispense with principles and cry "democracy has spoken"...enabling the plunder and recolonisation of the indigenous.
The NZ First bill in 2006 sought ‘to correct an anomaly that has harmed race relations in New Zealand since 1986 when the vague term “the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi” was included in legislation.’ This bill was defeated soundly and references to treaty principles remain in New Zealand law.
Back to today - or last night.
Naturally Don Brash's 2004 Orewa speech writer Paul Goldsmith rushed to cameras as it all went to custard - telling the public to not worry about a thing ...make no defences, do not prepare for a "battle", leave the gate open cos National will only support Act's ( and NZ First's ) divisive bill to Select Committee.
Notably this was the posture taken by National after secret negotiations played out for 41 days behind closed doors far away from democracy ...and now the trap was set...to sooth them and pacify them until it was all too late.
Luxon did not have the balls to rule this bill out.
Luxon had also rejected being specific or answering questions properly to the media long go - and so now he stood at a distance watching the carnage and ruin unfold in what was once a much more cohesive society - and his weak negotiation skills and lack of moral fibre bore fruit ...the tail wagged his dog and no amount of houses and prosperity could change that.
Having an incompetent leader that Seymour and Winston can run rings around was what some wanted - and it did not take long for all of New Zealand to start to see the error made - when you vote lazily and with pure self interest instead of a scrap of concern for the bigger picture around you.
Luxon wanted a nation that was less inward looking at these type of constitutional protections for the indigenous and more outward looking - say to China - who would gladly plunder the fisheries here - or exploit our rivers, land, native forests - you know ...we need to have more confidence and be more outward looking repeated Luxon - but truly he loved America more especially Southern State country cultural music where Slavery once made those cotton farmers rich.
Luxon had bills to pay and he constantly reminded us he works, works, works everyday - so now he stayed aloof and far away from the Hui preferring to always be "Front and Centre" not some listener.
Luxon's bind was his own doing and now he watched helplessly as - Seymour ran amok - trying to destroy our social cohesion with Winston's aligned thinking about the deletion and replacement of Te Tiriti with something more to "Racist Uncle Bob's tastes".
All of Seymour's arguments about equality and unity broke down into farce when inspected properly so it was Seymour's job to avoid the real intellectuals and instead to use headlines and letters to appeal to "racist Uncle Bob from Tauranga" ( sorry Tauranga ) who said "He makes a lot of common sense".
We are talking about a constitutional founding contract being used as a political football and the tyranny of an uneducated majority being deployed as a "Can opener" so outsiders can get their hands on those lands and forests and water and fisheries.
Assimilation by stealth you might call it - but happily as you know, Te Ao Māori are way way ahead of this bloody game - saw it coming before we were born.
After the Māori had been nearly assimilated, taken from their roots into low paid factory jobs in the cities and treated like second class citizens ( no Maori allowed in Pukekoe ) the Māori Renaissance brought things back - and in many ways New Zealand law began to mature and grow up ( ask Helen Winklemann if you don't beleive me ) and reference to principles became slowly defined - but these were derived implicitly from the texts and it was the spirit derived that prevailed - this was no willy nilly interpretation - and that's one of the problems with Act.
Act now have defined three wildly different sets of alternative principles since 2022 - and today's version has nothing to do with the Treaty despite what Seymour mistakenly believes.
Seymour has gotten it wrong to suit his real agenda.
It's got everyone shaking their heads at him apart from a few - probably over on The Platform or at Hobson's Pledge or cheering Julian Batchelor.
The guts of the matter lies in what was really intended by the framers of Te Tiriti and how it was explained to those who signed - something we should hear much more about - from the likes of Ned Fletcher ( or similar scholars and historians ) before all the media polls start to show - "the public mood is changing and the gap is narrowing".
Cos you do realise that is what will happen?
By May or June it will shift from 32.1% for Seymour's Bill and 55.8% against - to something much closer and minds will change.
Remember Act has huge money behind it and greedy eyes are watching in the shadows...like they did once before ...when things seemed safe and everyone just carried on as if there was nothing to fear.
So with that in mind, I will write a bit more about that later today.
This shall not pass.
